Report on ladies fishing Lake O'Flynn

(June 12, 2011)
While most people looked at the weather last Sunday 12th June 2011 which was more reminiscent of March than June and decided to stay indoors, three of our members made the journey to join local members of the Lake O’Flynn and District Angling Club in order to take part in The Donnellan Cup fly fishing competition being held on Lake O’Flynn.
Julie Gerry from Co Kildare and past winner of the Lough Mask World Cup was fishing with Madeleine Kelly from Co Down a previous winner of the Graham Smith Trophy for Top Ladies International Rod in 2005. Jenny Casey also from Co Kildare was drawn with local angler Chris Connaughton.
The pistol fired at 11am to start the competition and the boats made their way up the lake. Within minutes all the anglers were fishing having elected not to travel very far and some rods were bent almost immediately. It was obvious that there was going to be a good catch for the day. Julie had come down the previous week for her first trip to the water so under her guidance she and Madeleine started fishing along the NE shore in the 2nd bay from the jetty. Madeleine opted for an intermediate line with traditional wet flies and Julie also on an intermediate line was trying lures.
By the end of the 2nd drift Madeleine had 3 trout and Julie had 7 pike.
There was no lessening in the rain during the day but anglers are used to that and the good fishing and lovely surroundings easily made up for it.
Things went quiet for a couple of hours with both Madeleine & Julie trying different methods and flies.
In the length of time that it took Madeleine to have a cup of tea (on the boat) Julie landed 3 trout. By this time she was fishing the claret wets that Madeleine had been catching on – bumble and dabblers. They were by this time further up the NE shore near the stony jetty. Jenny was in a boat close by and indicated that she had 2 trout. Things quietened again then for a few hours.
With about an hour to go Madeleine & Julie decided to return to the morning’s first drift because it hadn’t looked too busy all day. But because it was getting close to finishing time the boat was allowed to drift after the end of the drift so that it could be slipped easily into the bay just around the corner from the main jetty. By this time most of the boats were in there. There were lots of fish rising.
Julie finished off the last 20 minutes by catching a further 2 trout and 3 pike.
At the weigh-in Joe Crane and Tommy Greehan emerged as winners with 12 fish between them and Madeleine and Julie were 5th with 8 fish. They won entry into the Malone Cup to be fished on O’Flynn on July 24th.
Afterwards the anglers were well looked after in Donellan’s pub in Ballinlough with warm food and good craic.
